Background

Ring Main Unit Installation – During 6 monthly inspections which were part of an ongoing operation & maintenance contract we discovered low levels of SF6 gas in an Alstrom RT16 ring main unit.

It was brought to the customers attention. We advised to change and retrofit the unit due to the age of the unit. We assessed the unit in collaboration with a third party specialist and it was agreed that the unit was beyond economical repair.

Technical Remit

1. Removal of transformer oil.
2. Removal of cable terminations.
3. Dismantling of the ring main unit to transformer connections.
4. Lifted the ring main unit into position with a hyab lorry / crane.
5. Disposed of the old ring main unit through the correct recycling channels.
6. Lifted and installed the new ring main unit.
7. Replaced the oil and gaskets within the transformer.
8. Re-terminated both cables.
9. Tested and commissioned.
