Morriston Hospital: Substation 3, Substation 4, Substation 6 HV/LV Upgrade

C&P High Voltage Services, part of C&P Group Holdings, has delivered critical high voltage principal contractor projects for a number of NHS facilities and Hospitals in Wales and across the UK. These projects range from new substation design & installation to complete new private networks which include design, installation, through to commissioning and energisation.

We have a very good working relationship with the DNOs across the UK and have been involved in new electricity connections for various assets and are well positioned to deliver NHS high voltage infrastructure projects using our breadth and depth of technical and construction resources throughout the company.

The project at Morriston Hospital included designing and upgrading 3 substations, installing and jointing 11kV cable supplies and completing an LV cable diversion.

Scope of Works: Substation 6

Technical Scope of Works:

  • Supply, Install, Test and Commission two new free-standing Schneider RN2c-T21 ring main units.
  • Supply & install 2 No. 2000kVA, Tier 1, Dyn11 transformers with a voltage ratio of 11000/415 volts, 50Hz. free breathing with an enviro gel breather. HV cable box, bottom entry and a LV cable box suitable for connection of free issue LV Bus Duct flange provided by others.
  • Supply and install 11kV inter plant cables between Schneider HV switchgear and 2 No. 2000kVA TX’s
  • Supply and make off 4 No. HV Raychem cable terminations (termination, lugs, boots, earth connection and gland) for cable terminations associated with the Ring Main circuits.
  • Supply & install 2 No. 16 way earth bars, complete with a dis-connector link in the HV Switch compound.
  • Supply & install HV earth system for Substation 6 TX6A & TX6B as per drawing
  • Connect HV switchgear and transformers to the main earth bar with 25mm x 6mm soft drawn copper tape.
  • Supply & install 30volt DC battery trip unit. (240volt supply by others)
  • Supply & install Emergency trip button in LV switch room
  • Supply & install inter trip cabling between the customers HV switch, transformer, LV panel, EPO and DC battery unit.
  • Project Management time and provision of project specific Method Statement and Risk Assessment.
  • Carry out all necessary HV switching, cable pressure testing, commissioning and phasing checks.
  • Provision of all associated test certificates.
Substation 3
  • Supply, Install, Test and Commission two new free-standing Schneider RE2c-T21 ring main units.
  • Isolate, De-commission and remove redundant CHP RMU.
  • Connect HV switchgear and transformers to the main earth bar with 25mm x 6mm soft drawn copper tape.
  • Supply and make off 2 No. HV Raychem cable terminations (termination, lugs, boots, earth connection and gland) for cable terminations associated with the Ring Main circuits.
  • Provision of all associated test certificates
11kV Cabling
  • Supply and install, in a cable trench by others, a maximum of 2 x 800 metres of 1 x 3c 185mm 6.35/11kV, XLPE/SWA/LSF RED 11kV cable to replace the existing cable from the Main Intake
  • Substation to RMU’s at Sub 3A, 3B, 3C & 3D.
  • Supply & install a maximum of 40 No. 11kV cable markers along the 11kV cable route.
  • Breakdown & re-make 10 No. 11kV cable terminations on Main Intake Substation circuit breakers and Sub 3 RMU’s 3A, 3B, 3C & 3D – 2 No. HV terminations per location.
  • Carry out all HV operational works to provide, isolation, earthing, issue of safety documentation, jointing, testing & commissioning to replace the existing 11kV cable for the new and return to operational condition with the new 11kV cable system.
LV Cabling – Gen 4, Gen 6 and 300mm LV cable Diversion
  • Supply, install and terminate a maximum of 175 metres route length, of 5 x 4 x 1c 630mm Cu. XLPE/AWA/ LSZH LV cable to link from the new Generator No. 4 to the LV cable box on the Customers new LV panel incoming section. (3500 metres maximum length allowed for tender purposes). LV cables to be installed in Trefoil formation, at high level on ladder racking provided by others.
  • Supply & install a maximum of 650 trefoil aluminium cleats to secure the LV single core trefoil cables to the ladder racking.
  • Supply & install a maximum of 650 single core cleats to secure the LV single core Neutral cables to the ladder racking. Neutral cables to be installed alongside phase Trefoil formations, at high level, on ladder racking provided by others.
  • Supply, install and terminate a maximum of 175 metres route length, of 2 x 1 x 1c 800mm Cu. Green/Yellow LSZH cable to link from the new Generator No. 4 to the LV cable box on the
  • Customers new LV panel incoming section. (350 metres maximum length allowed for tender purposes). LV cables to be installed alongside phase Trefoil formations, at high level, on ladder racking provided by others.
  • Supply & install a maximum of 325 single core cleats to secure the single core earth cables to the ladder racking.
  • Supply, install and terminate a maximum of 30 metres route length, of 5 x 4 x 1c 630mm Cu. XLPE/AWA/ LSZH LV cable to link from the new Generator No. 6 to the LV cable box on the Customers new LV panel incoming section. (600 metres maximum length allowed for tender purposes). LV cables to be installed in Trefoil formation, on ladder racking provided by others.
  • Supply & install a maximum of 80 trefoil aluminium cleats to secure the LV single core trefoil cables to the ladder racking.
  • Supply & install a maximum of 80 single core cleats to secure the LV single core Neutral cables to the ladder racking. Neutral cables to be installed alongside phase Trefoil formations, on ladder racking provided by others.
  • Supply, install and terminate a maximum of 30 metres route length, of 2 x 1 x 1c 800mm Cu. Green/Yellow LSZH cable to link from the new Generator No. 6 to the LV cable box on the Customers new LV panel incoming section. (60 metres maximum length allowed for tender purposes). LV cables to be installed alongside phase Trefoil formations, on ladder racking provided by others.
  • Supply & install a maximum of 40 single core cleats to secure the single core earth cables to the ladder racking.
  • Supply & install and terminate a maximum of 2 x 30 metres of 1 x 300mm 4c XLPE/SWA/ LSZH LV cable to allow the existing Chiller cable to be diverted to the new Sub 6 LV switchboard.
  • Supply and make off 2 No. 300mm/300mm LV straight joints.
  • Supply & install and terminate a maximum of 4 x 2 x 125 metres of 240mm 4c XLPE/SWA/ LSZH LV cable to connect 2 No. remote LV Panels to the new Sub 6 LV switchboard.
  • Supply & install a maximum of 900 single core cleats to secure the 630mm single core earth cables to the ladder racking provided by others.
  • Carry out all LV operational works to provide, isolation, earthing, issue of safety documentation, jointing, testing & commissioning to replace the existing LV cable for the new and return to operational condition with the new LV cable system.
  • Provision of all associated test certificates
  • Supply & install a maximum of 900 single core cleats to secure the 240mm 4c LV cables to the ladder racking provided by others.
  • Supply, install and terminate a maximum of 125 metres route length, of 2 x 1c 630mm Cu. Green/Yellow LSZH cable to link from the 2 No. remote LV Panels to the new Sub 6 LV switchboard.
  • Sub 6 Substation HV earth nests as per Mechanical & Electrical Drawings
  • Sub 4 Generator earth nest as perMechanical & Electrical Drawings
